Her husband, Julian, was still alive when cops arrived, but only long enough to murmur, “My wife knows who done this to me,” to the officer. Now, seven years later her defense team argued that the case should be re- opened since the original defense lavaВ»year failed to uncover if her low intelligence score and psychiatric vulnerability led her able to scheme the murders. With her intelligence score being at only a 72 which psychologists would consider boarder line retarded, you could see why that may be considered.

But prosecutors disagreed since “no medical professional has concluded that Teresa Lewis meets the medical or statutory definition of mentally retarded. ” With that, the Supreme Court voted against her with a 7-2 vote. The sociological theory seen is this article was deviance and social control because in the article she had her husband and son killed and all the acts she committed where deviant. She broke many rules and norms of society so I felt that it was a great article to write about. Social control fits this because it’s the way society enforces its rules.

It is relevant to a sociological perspective because it literally has all the requirements to represent deviance and social control. The deviance part is obvious because she broke a pretty important norm and society is punishing her for it which is the social control part. It’s quite clear she knew what she was doing, knew how she was going to do it, and knew what she wanted to get in the end- money. Conflict theorists would look at this as a social change from conflict with Teresa Lewis and the killings of her husband and son.
