The perks of being a stewardess

As I age, realize that this life we are given is very special and unique. We are blessed with certain qualities that set us apart from everyone else, and we use these qualities to make something incredible out of ourselves. I believe we are put on this Earth to live out our greatest dreams, find our belonging in life, and discover true happiness. I feel will not be able to achieve these goals if I do not go beyond the ordinary to try and fulfill them. Though in this life, most people have to work to earn their dreams; everybody starts somewhere, we all just need a push in the right direction.

Because the purpose of this paper is to write about a career once thought about perusing, I asked myself, “How can I maintain a career, yet still fulfill my dreams? ” To begin to answer that, my most important dream is to travel to the world. I want to visit the seven wonders, see the Tulip Fields in Netherlands, the very famous Street in Bonn, Germany, and Stay at the worlds most amazing hotels like ?sheer Cliff, in Switzerland which is on the side of a very high mountain, and Hotel Sultanates, Finland where you stay in an igloo and see the northern lights.

When I asked myself what kind of job could get that has me travel the world, the first thing that came to mind is a flight attendant, or stewardess. I am not too big on traveling via airplane, but my fear of flying would not stop me from seeing the world. When researching about flight attendants I learned information that made me think twice before ever pursuing this field as a career. Flight attendants provide service to ensure the safety and comfort of airline passengers.

They clean the cabins between flights, attend preflight meetings, demonstrate the safety requirements, ensure safety equipment is irking, serve food and drink to the passengers, administer first aid, and direct passengers incase of an emergency. Stewardess’ median pay was around 538. 000 per year in the year 2012. You must be 18 years of age or older, must have a high school diploma or equivalent, and typically looking for experience in customer service. You must also have a valid passport and can pass a background check.

The perks of being a stewardess include free rent, and transport, and the airlines pay your bills too. They also get up to ninety percent off flight tickets! To become a stewardess, one must receive raining from their employer and must be certified by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). A high school diploma is typically the minimum educational requirement but some airlines prefer to hire applicants who have taken some college courses. Flight attendants are asked to have at least one to two years of work experience.

This includes customer service positions in restaurants, hotels, or other experiences that involve close contact with the public. New flight attendants must be more flexible with their schedule and location. Once a flight attendant is hired, their initial training ranges from here to six weeks. Trainees learn emergency procedures like evacuating the aircraft, operating emergency equipment, and administering first aid. They also receive specific instruction on flight regulations and job duties. When the training is almost done, the students go on a few practice flights.

They must successfully complete their training in order to keep their job as a flight attendant. The work environment of flight attendants can be difficult and causes much stress. A typical shift is usually around 12 to 14 hours. However, duty time can be increased for international flights. Stewardesses work evenings, weekends, and holidays and they sometimes may be away from home for two to three days a week-sharing hotels or apartments with a group of other flight attendants. A typical attendant usually spends 75 to 90 hours a month in the air, and presumably another 50 hours in preflight meetings.

As attendants earn more seniority, they gain more control over their schedules. Sometimes, flight attendants do experience work related injury and illness. Injuries can occur when opening overhead compartments, during turbulence, pushing carts, or during aircraft emergencies. Illness is caused by irregular sleep patterns, the stress of frequent travel, and being exposed to ill passengers, ultimately all leading to medical problems. In the year 2012, more than 20,000 people applied to work for American Airlines and only 1 ,500 attendant jobs were filled.

Despite the avalanche of applications it received, American Airlines, in fact, is in bankruptcy. They have changed flight attendant contracts, requiring them to work more hours and pay more for medical insurance. Since the airlines struggle financially there will be no growth in the number of jobs for this field. In one of the online articles I read, the writer interviewed a flight attendant. The attendant confessed as to how she constantly struggled with rude or grumpy passengers, and she claimed to have received “crazy” requests from passengers.

A few of the requests she mentioned were “a bag to spit in,” or “hot fried chips,” and sometimes she was asked for her phone number. She got a lot of questions asking if the mile high club exists. She further mentioned how couples do in fact execute intercourse during flights. She also says the bathrooms were utterly disgusting, but did not go into detail. Fortunately, for most flight attendants their memorable experiences tend more to be humorous or ridiculous rather than tragic.

After researching more about this field, have been informed that being a flight attendant was voted one of the worst jobs of 201 3, and most stewardesses resigned because of low pay. The idea of being able to travel around the world just by flying a plane is a great one, but after all my research it seems there are more negatives about this career than there are positives. Despite these facts, it is something could do for part of my life. I m a college student who is not majoring in anything currently, and I am constantly questioned what want to major in, or what do I want to be when I grow up.

To this day, I still do not know what career I want to be in for the rest of my life, and I am not in any rush to find out. I do know however, that I want to grow up happy, ensuring to become the best person I can be. I feel that setting one specific goal in your life is boring and unsatisfying. If you have multiple goals then you have multiple chances to be something amazing, and if you fail at one thing, you can try to fulfill another, though one should never tit trying. Doing the same thing for the rest of my life does not sound appealing to me.

I want to try different career fields to figure out what really want to do and what will make me happy, kind of like how I want to travel the world to find the place to want settle. I understand the chance to travel the world is not going to fall into my hands, and I know I need to work to earn these opportunities. Good things take time, and as much as I want them to happen now, I have realized that the challenges we face to become who we want to be, makes us who we are. Want to try to live out my dreams, and even if I do not succeed, the fact that I tried is better than not trying it at all.
