Sociology – watching the film

While watching the film there were many moments that struck me as interesting. The first moment that struck me the most was when Jean Reynolds, who is a 51 year old, certified nursing assistant, daughter said she had cancer. That she would not live for long because Jean could not afford to get her daughter treatment. The second moment that struck me was when Barbara Brooks, a 36 year old, single mother said that she was “hustling backwards”. She wants to provide for her children, and is even trying to get rather in her education to accomplish this.

However every time she advanced there would be something that pulled her back. For example when she got a raise then they took some of her benefits away. 2. One symbol that stuck out to me immediately was the image of the American flag. The American flag stand for freedom, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. Also it could stand for the American dream but these people in the film aren’t living the American dream. There work hard and they can barely make a living if even that.

The second symbol that stuck out to me where the Christmas gifts that Mary Ventilate received from the shelter. There is a part when she said that she donated to people like her. But somehow life placed her in the situation where she required that help and donation from others. 3. If could interview any of the individuals in the film I would want to interview Jean Reynolds. I would ask her first how her daughter was doing. I would also ask if any f her kids are working and helping her out with expenses. Also if she got a raise at her job or not. I believe that many factors contribute and explain why many people live in poverty. The one however that I believe best explains why many people live in poverty is structural. Society is divided into two major part, those who are rich and continue to get rich, and those who are poor and continue to be poor. The gap between those who are wealthy and those who are below the poverty line has been widening over the years. Also the poor are taking advantage of and get paid wages that just aren’t livable in today’s world. 5.
